Welcome to South Africa!

And welcome to Capetown, South Africa.  A hip, beautiful, seaside town on the southwestern coast of South Africa.

Six of us, three siblings and three "outlaws", toured four locations in southern Africa:  Capetown and Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Capetown

We began in Capetown and the image above is a view of Chapman's Peak from across Hout Bay. Below is the traveling "family of friends."

Now you can say you've seen the southwestern most point of Africa - Cape of Good Hope

In the category of things you wouldn't see along the road in the USA...When's the last time you saw an ostrich on the beach?

Botanical Gardens

We took a delightful stroll through the expansive Botanical Gardens. Below,One of many stunning two-tone statues at the Botanical Gardens. And following is a video of one of the more challenged Botanical Gardens residents, a Guinea Fowl.

African Penguins

No visit to Capetown is complete without a visit to Boulder Beach, home to a huge colony of African Penguins. These guys live the good life in a protected cove, just south of Capetown.  They're tiny at only 18 inches tall, but waddle with authority. I could have watched them all day.

Penguins. Lots and lots of very content penguins. Ever the well dressed.

Robben Island

A visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years of incarceration.  It's hard to even imagine how challenging, both physically and emotionally, those years must have been. But he persevered and raised not only himself, but his nation, above atrocities and hatred.

Traditional Dancing

Then came an evening of traditional dancing with men and women from all over Africa.  What a joyous event! The floor shook and the drums reverberated in your bones.

Awesome wineries

We had the luxury of visiting a couple of wineries which would rival those of Napa Valley.  But one of them certainly had a sense of humor.

One of the most amusing signs ever!

capetown, you've made an impression on me!
